Seasonal Affective Disorder is a form of depression that occurs during winter months. Persons between the ages of 15 and 55 seem to be the most susceptible, as are women. Interestingly, older people are less inclined toward this malady.

If you suffer from symptoms of sadness and irritability, feel tired, and have difficulty concentrating during winter months, you might be experiencing Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The likelihood increases the farther you live from the equator since the symptoms of SAD are tend to be increased by a lack of sunlight.

Depression produces feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of self-worth. You may experience thoughts of suicide or lose interest in activities that you once enjoyed. Fatigue and insomnia may also result.

Many studies have shown that negative ions improve mood and relieve symptoms of SAD.

Atoms are invisible particles that contain an electric charge.  A neutral atom consists of an equal number of protons (positive charges) and neutrons (negative charges). They become ions when these charges are not equal. When an atom loses protons or gains neutrons it becomes a negative ion.  Conversely, when the reverse happens it produces positive ions.

Growing research shows that the high levels of positive ions in our living environment contribute to disease and depressed behaviors. Today, our homes are loaded with electrical appliances: computers, heating and air conditioning, radios, t.v.’s microwaves, and a growing number of computerized accessories in our cars and trucks. All these electromagnetic frequencies produce an overabundance of positive ions in the air. So much time surrounded by all these appliances is known to cause sleeplessness, irritability (bad moods) and feelings of depression.

Although it sounds like a contradiction, negative ions have a positive effect on your health and well-being. Studies show that negative ions help seasonal affective disorder and encourage an improved mood. Negative ions are usually caused by moving air such as after a storm, or from mountain breezes. sunlight and running water. Rivers, waterfalls, and ocean waves also produce negative ions. This is why people feel renewed and refreshed after a storm or when they visit lakes and rivers. This is especially noticeable when on the beach – or a cruise ship. These phenomena definitely result in an improved mood.

Most of us deal with electrical appliances and electronic equipment on a daily basis, and as much we’d like to soak up the sun sitting beside the ocean, it’s not possible. There are a number of other ways to increase your intake of negative ions. One of the easiest ways is through the use of pink Himalayan salt lamps.

Pink Himalayan salt lamps are made from large hollow pieces of salt rock. Usually mounted on a wooden base, a light bulb is mounted inside the lamp. When turned on it emits a pleasing orange glow. Being hygroscopic, the pink salt attracts water to its surface. The water is quickly evaporated by the heat from the light bulb. This is more noticeable in humidity. Negative ions are produced through this evaporation process.

The area the lamp will cover is determined by the size of the salt rock. A lamp 8 to 10 inches high and 6 to 8 inches wide might cover an area 12 ft. by 12 ft. Or on 2 to 14 inches high and 10 to 13 inches wide might reach out 20 ft. by 20 ft. Othe sizes are available and correct coverage is further determined by the quality of the salt. Small lamps that can be plugged into the USB port of a computer are also available.
